Last weekend 2025 Concorso d’Elanza Villa d’Este Zagato was again in the spotlight to present his latest coachbuilt cars. In addition to the BMW M4 Cabrio-based Bovensiepen Zagato, the Milanese also presented the Alfa Romeo Doppiacoda: a unique concept that represents the legendary 8C competition. The 8c, a model in production between 2008 and 2010 and also served as the basis for the breathtaking disco Volante from Carrozzeria Touring Superleggera.
This special build was commissioned by an Italian collector and is a sequence of the six-cylinder Giulia SWB project from 2023. It will first work together on the legendary 8C line that goes back to the 1930s when Alfa Romeo and Zagato first worked together on racing cars.
“We may have just started a new chapter in Zagato design, which focuses on researching tail sections and researched new aerodynamic and stylistic solutions for exploring innovations. Instead, we have created a real fusion of rounds and shortened cocks in a single body styles, which still shapes the functional advantages of both.” Andrea Michele Zagato, President of Zagato
The front facial authority has revised aerial photographs and a sharper headlight profile compared to the standard 8c. The black contrast to Zagato’s characteristic double bubble roof serves as a large visual contrast to the striking red paint. However, the highlight of this tailor -made unique commission is in the name; “Doppiacoda”, which means “double tail” in Italian.
In contrast to a removable tail section that can be seen on the AGTZ twin tail, the Doppiacoda combines Two of Zagato’s most striking design codes: The signature of the aerodynamic comb-tail (Coda Tronca) or the cut section near the vertical tail and rounded sail (Coda-Tonda), which leads to a unique, visually noticeable and yet functional rear end. A contemporary interpretation of two classic design elements from the past, the wrap-around-proof wing, which appears from behind, is actually hormonally integrated into the body and improves both the output and aesthetic attractiveness.
The Coda Tronca is a design solution that is traditionally used in extreme sports car inspired by breeds. That is why this “wing controversy” was specially developed for this car. “ – Norihiko Harada, chief designer at Zagato
Although the exact performance specifications of the 8C-DoppiaPiacoda do not give a word, the Alfa Romeo 8c Competizione contained a 4.7-liter ferrari/Maserati F136 YC V8 V8 motor under the motor hood, with 444 hp on a tap, paired with an automated manual transmission at six speeds. As already mentioned, it is a tailor -made unique build without plans for further production. The Alfa Romeo Doppiacoda won the Concept Car Cup in this year’s Villa d’Este, and not only recalls that it is reminiscent of beauty and individuality, but also as a celebration of more than a century of cooperation between Zagato and Alfa Romeo.
