Factory car alarms provide a basic layer of theft deterrence, but they are rarely enough on their own to protect a vehicle from every type of security risk. Modern vehicle theft can involve keyless-entry relay attacks, stolen keys, tow-away theft, break-ins, component theft, and unauthorized use. Because different security devices address different problems, the most useful setup is often one that combines several layers rather than depending on a single alarm.
The right combination depends on the vehicle, where it is parked, how frequently it is used, and the owner’s main concern. Someone parking on a city street may prioritize visible deterrents and video recording, while another driver may care more about tracking a vehicle if it disappears.
Below are some of the main car security devices worth considering beyond the alarm installed by the manufacturer.
1. Vehicle Tracking Devices
A tracking device can help locate a vehicle after it has been moved or stolen. A GPS Tracker typically uses satellite positioning to determine the vehicle’s location and then sends that information through a cellular or wireless connection to an app or online platform.
Tracking devices can provide features such as current location, location history, movement alerts, and virtual boundaries that send a notification when the vehicle leaves a defined area.
Their main advantage is that they continue to provide information after a vehicle is no longer where the owner left it. An alarm may draw attention during a break-in, but a tracking unit can help show where the vehicle goes afterward.
There are trade-offs, however. Many trackers require an ongoing service fee, while battery-powered models need periodic charging. Hardwired units solve the battery problem but may require installation. Device placement also matters because a unit that is too easy to find may be removed by a thief.
Tracking should therefore be viewed primarily as a recovery and monitoring tool rather than a complete theft-prevention measure.
2. GPS-Enabled Dash Cameras
Video recording adds a different type of protection. A dash cam with gps can capture what happens around the vehicle while also recording location, route, or speed information depending on the camera and its settings.
The security value of a camera extends beyond recording traffic accidents. Models with parking surveillance can detect movement or impacts while the vehicle is unattended. This may help document vandalism, hit-and-run incidents, attempted break-ins, or suspicious activity around the car.

Parking surveillance can be particularly valuable, but it creates another consideration: power. A camera that records while the engine is off needs a suitable power source. Hardwiring may allow longer parking monitoring, but the installation should be configured to avoid excessive battery drain.
Video security also depends on visibility. Cameras may discourage opportunistic theft, but visible equipment can sometimes attract attention if a thief believes valuable electronics are inside.
3. Steering Wheel Locks
Steering wheel locks are among the simplest vehicle security devices available. They physically restrict steering wheel movement, making the vehicle more difficult to drive even if someone gains access to the cabin.
One of their strongest benefits is visibility. A brightly colored steering lock can be seen through the window, potentially discouraging a thief before they attempt to enter the vehicle.
They are also relatively inexpensive and do not require wiring, apps, subscriptions, or professional installation.
The limitation is convenience. Drivers must install and remove the lock every time they park. That small task can eventually lead some owners to stop using the device regularly.
A steering lock also cannot guarantee that a vehicle will not be stolen. Physical security devices can potentially be cut or defeated with sufficient tools and time. Their purpose is to increase effort and make another vehicle appear easier to target.
4. Wheel Clamps
A wheel clamp, sometimes called a wheel lock, prevents the wheel from rotating freely. These devices are commonly associated with trailers, caravans, and long-term vehicle storage, but they can also be used for cars.
A wheel clamp can provide a strong visual warning and create a substantial physical obstacle. It may be particularly useful for vehicles that remain parked for several days or weeks at a time.
For everyday driving, however, a wheel clamp is less convenient than a steering lock. Installing and removing one can take more time, and storing a bulky metal device in the vehicle may be inconvenient.
For this reason, wheel clamps tend to make the most sense when theft resistance is more important than quick daily use.
5. Immobilizers and Kill Switches
An immobilizer prevents the engine from starting unless the correct key, code, or electronic signal is present. Many newer vehicles already contain factory immobilization technology, but additional aftermarket systems can provide another layer.
A hidden kill switch works on a related principle by interrupting a circuit required for starting or operating the vehicle. Depending on the installation, it may interrupt power to the starter, fuel pump, ignition, or another system.
The main benefit is that these devices address an important point in vehicle theft: being able to drive the car away.
Their effectiveness depends heavily on installation quality. A poorly fitted electrical device can create reliability issues, while an obvious switch defeats much of the purpose of hiding it.
Professional installation may therefore be worthwhile, particularly for newer vehicles with complex electronic systems.
6. OBD Port Locks
The onboard diagnostics port, commonly called the OBD-II port, gives technicians access to vehicle diagnostic information. Unfortunately, access to this connection can also create security concerns on some vehicles because specialized equipment may be used to interact with electronic systems.
An OBD port lock physically restricts access to the connector.
It is a relatively small addition compared with other security devices, but it can be useful when combined with an immobilizer or other protection system.
The drawback is that technicians will need access to the port during servicing or diagnostics. Owners must therefore remember how the lock works and keep any keys or removal tools available.
An OBD lock should be considered one barrier among several rather than a standalone answer to vehicle theft.
7. Keyless Entry Signal Protection

One of the simplest protective measures is a signal-blocking pouch, often referred to as a Faraday pouch.
When working correctly, the pouch reduces radio communication between the key and outside equipment.
The appeal is obvious: it is inexpensive and requires no changes to the vehicle. But effectiveness depends on the quality and condition of the pouch. Signal-blocking material can wear over time, so owners should occasionally check whether the vehicle still recognizes the key while it is inside the pouch.
Some vehicles also allow passive entry to be disabled through their settings, which may be worth considering when convenience is less important than reducing exposure to relay attacks.
8. Security Lights and Parking Cameras
Vehicle security is not limited to devices installed inside the car. The environment around the vehicle can also influence risk.
Motion-activated exterior lighting can make concealed activity more difficult around a driveway. Home security cameras can provide a wider view than a vehicle-mounted camera and may record people approaching the car before an incident occurs.
This broader coverage can be useful because vehicle cameras often have limited viewing angles.
The trade-off is that home-based security measures only help when the vehicle is parked at that particular location. They offer little protection in shopping centers, workplaces, public garages, or other parking areas.
For drivers who park at home most nights, however, improving the parking environment can support the security devices already installed on the car.
9. Aftermarket Alarm Systems
A factory alarm should not automatically be considered ineffective. Its main limitation is that it may provide fewer sensors or notification options than some aftermarket systems.
Additional systems can include glass-break sensors, tilt detection, shock sensors, interior motion sensors, and smartphone alerts.

Expensive wheels and tires can be attractive theft targets even when criminals have no intention of taking the entire vehicle.

They are inexpensive compared with replacing a complete set of wheels. At the same time, they should not be treated as impossible to defeat. Specialized removal tools exist, and determined thieves may still find ways to remove them.
Their main purpose is to add difficulty and time.
Owners also need to keep the locking key in a safe but accessible place because tire shops and roadside assistance providers may need it during repairs.
Layered Security Usually Makes More Sense
No individual security product covers every possible scenario.
A steering lock might make the car harder to drive away but cannot help identify where it went if the thief defeats the lock. A tracking device may help locate a stolen vehicle but does not necessarily prevent someone from entering it. A camera may record an incident without physically stopping it.
Layering addresses these gaps.
For example, a driver might combine a visible steering wheel lock with a hidden tracking unit and parking-mode video recording. The steering lock acts as a deterrent, the tracking system supports recovery, and the camera provides evidence.
The exact combination should reflect the owner’s risk rather than simply the number of products available.
Consider How and Where the Vehicle Is Used
Security decisions should begin with the vehicle’s real-world use.
A car parked overnight on a public street faces different risks from one stored inside a locked garage. A high-value performance car may justify more expensive immobilization and tracking equipment than an older daily commuter. Similarly, a vehicle that remains unattended for long periods may benefit more from battery-conscious monitoring systems.

More monitoring is not automatically better if it creates unnecessary privacy concerns or large amounts of data that nobody will realistically review.
Choosing the Right Car Security Setup
The most expensive security device is not automatically the most suitable one.

Those worried about vandalism or parking damage may gain more from parking surveillance and exterior cameras. Owners of keyless vehicles may find that signal protection provides useful protection at very little cost.
The strongest approach is usually to combine deterrence, prevention, detection, and recovery.
A factory alarm can still play a useful role, but it works better as one layer of vehicle security rather than the entire system. By considering how the car is used, the risks it faces, installation requirements, privacy, ongoing costs, and everyday convenience, owners can choose security measures that provide meaningful protection without adding unnecessary complexity.
