After years of complaints about defects, drivers of certain models from Nissan Murano and Maxima could continuously have a closure (CVTS) a closure, but the recent agreement on class lawsuit releases can feel more like a consolation price for many. The car manufacturer has approved a payment of $ 3.47 million and an extended guarantee for affected vehicles, but the majority of the billing money is directed directly to the lawyers-and the warranty extension offers most owners a limited value of the real world.
The class action, which was originally submitted in Tennessee at the end of 2022, accused Nissan of knowingly sold vehicles that knowingly sold with faulty CVTs. In particular, the Nissan Murano 2015–2018 and the vehicles claimed by the owners participated in 2016–2018 under premature transmission errors. The plaintiffs requested comprehensive appeals: transfer replacement, complete disclosure of Nissan and an immediate stopover for the sale of the problematic units. What they got was far less.
According to court documents, Nissan has not approved misconduct as part of the agreement. Instead, the company agreed to a flat -rate payment of 3.47 million US dollars. Of these, only 20,000 US dollars for the four leading plaintiffs are provided -around 5,000 US dollars. The remaining 3.45 million US dollars go to the legal team. It is a well -known scenario in the class settlements: great legal costs and relatively minor compensation for people directly affected.
In addition to the money, Nissan offers an extended guarantee of 84 months or 84,000 miles, depending on what comes first. The catch? These vehicles are already at or beyond this seven -year brand, which means that many owners will probably not benefit from the additional coverage. In other words, the expansion can read well on paper, but in practice there is little suitable for those who have already suffered costly transmission errors.
There are some options for how owners can still benefit from it. Nissan has agreed to reimburse customers for “qualified” CVT repairs that were carried out during the now expanded warranty window. Repairs that are carried out in a Nissan dealer can be treated fully, while the work in independent shops can be reimbursed up to 5,000 US dollars. In addition, owners who have carried out two or more gearboxes or repairs can entitle you to a new purchase or rental agreement in Nissan or Infiniti for a discount of $ 1,500 – but you must choose between this and the reimbursement. You can’t have either.
A final hearing is planned for July 18, which determines whether the settlement becomes official.
This lawsuit is only the latest chapter in a broader narrative of the ongoing challenges for Nissan. As in our latest article about Nissan’s problems with impending layoffs, the car manufacturer already affects considerable restructuring, including potential reductions in the workforce. The timing of the CVT settlement only contributes to the increasing headache of the brand, since it works to rebuild the consumer’s trust and stabilize its global operations.
For consumers who examine long-term reliability and the vehicles connected to CVT, especially from 2015–2018, this case serves as another red flag. Nissan’s reaction to systemic transmission problems continued to raised the eyebrows, especially in view of similar symptoms in other models and markets. For many, the settlement does not do enough to tackle the core problem or prevent future problems.
